ABB will build Latin America's first digital substation
in Juazeiro, northeastern Brazil.
The new 230 kV substation and the connection station of the Juazeiro II substation will transmit electricity
to the 156 MW photovoltaic power plant under development in the area.
ABB will build Latin America's first digital substation in Brazil
The Juazeiro PV plant project is owned and operated
by British investment firm Actis and its renewable energy company Atlas Renewables in Latin America.
Atlas oversees more than 1,500 MW of PV assets
in operation, under construction and under development.
When fully operational, these projects will generate enough clean energy to power more than 350,000 homes and reduce the CO2 emissions
of more than 1.
5 million tons from conventional power generation projects.
ABB will deliver the entire Juazeiro substation and provide a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system and intelligent electronics for protection and control, as well as a state-of-the-art SAM600 combined unit
in the switchstation.
In addition, copper cables will be replaced
by digital fiber optic cables.
Digital substations are based on ABB Ability's™ technology and help improve controllability and reliability while optimizing costs for customers
.
Substations are the heart of the power grid, transmitting and distributing power to distant locations, so their safety, reliability and efficiency are critical
.
Switching to a digital fiber optic connection can greatly reduce the number of copper cables required in a substation, which is a significant cost savings
.
Digital substations also significantly reduce footprint and improve personnel safety, as system oversight of digital equipment reduces the need for manual intervention and eliminates the possibility of
dangerous electric shocks in the control room.
"ABB continues to be at the forefront of digital grid technology development, offering a full suite of digital substation automation, control and protection solutions
from substations to network control centers.
" Patrick Fragman, Head of Power Grid Integration at ABB, said: "We are excited to support the construction of Latin America's first digital substation to develop a stronger, smarter and greener grid
.
”
In 2017, ABB completed a similar upgrade at a substation in New York City, and digital technology has been applied to power hundreds of thousands of customers in Manhattan
.
ABB also recently won an order from TAURON Dystrybucja SA, Poland's leading power company, to deploy the first digital substation
for Poland.
