ABB specialty transformers deploy the world's largest power wind turbines
ABB will deploy 40 special transformers to equip wind turbines
from an offshore wind farm in the Irish Sea.
The Mitsubishi Heavy Industries-Vestas offshore wind turbine is 195 meters tall and weighs 1,000 tons, equivalent to 2/3 the weight of the Eiffel Tower and twice the weight of a fully loaded Airbus A380
.
Its 80-meter rotating blades sweep the equivalent of three football fields and can produce 8 megawatts of electricity, making it the world's most powerful wind turbine
.
ABB has received an order
from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries-Vestas Offshore Wind for the Walney offshore wind farm expansion project.
This offshore wind farm belongs to East Energy in Denmark
.
The expansion project will add 660 MW of potential generation capacity to the existing offshore wind farm capacity of 367 MW
.
The western half of ABB's transformer-supplied expansion project will account for half of the new capacity, or 330 MW
.
As previously announced, ABB has signed a contract for a
high-voltage cable system to transmit power to land from the Walney offshore wind farm extension project.
Once completed, the Walney offshore wind farm will have the capacity to supply 800,000 homes with clean electricity, which will contribute
to the UK's 2020 target of 15% energy from renewable energy and CO2 reductions.
ABB's 9.
7 MWA, 34 kV transformers and low-voltage products will be installed inside
turbine towers.
ABB's specialty transformers meet the most stringent electrical and mechanical requirements
.
Transformers feature custom design features and use best-in-class raw materials and components
.
Its shockproof, short-circuit-resistant compact design fits into the turbine space while weighing up to 30%
less than similar standard transformers.
