The European Union promulgated Directive (EU) 2019/904 on single-use plastics in 2019 to reduce environmental pollution caused by plastics.
Since then, member states need to translate this directive into national laws, which will be implemented on July 3, 2021
.
So what has been the actual implementation of the single-use plastics directive a year after it was promulgated?
According to a press report by European Plastics Converters (European Plastics Processing Association), the implementation of the ban on plastics is not uniform in the member states
.
So far, only 13 member states have implemented the plastic ban directive, which restricts the use of certain plastics
.
Countries in the eastern and northern EU have yet to fully incorporate the ban into national law, while others, such as France and Spain, have adopted stricter packaging laws based on the ban, especially for single-use packaging of fruits and vegetables
.
Plastic industry manufacturers are very worried about these inconsistent practices, and they expect the European Commission to play a greater role in coordinating the pace of countries
.
