Aquilaria sinensis (Lour.
) Gilg is a woody wood containing resin.
It is a traditional Chinese medicine and natural spice in China, Japan, India, Southeast Asia and other countries.
Bai Muxiang can produce agarwood resin only when it is damaged by the outside world or infected by fungi.
With the development of the agarwood market, the natural habitat of agarwood plants has been severely damaged, and now Baimuxiang has been listed as a national secondary endangered plant.
In order to continuously utilize the resources of agarwood, the rapid aroma-forming technology has become the most effective way to increase the yield of agarwood, such as the microbial aroma method.
Although the microbial aroma method has been proven to significantly increase the yield of agarwood, the function of new fungal resources and their fermentation products that promote aroma formation remains to be studied.
Recently, Xu Jianchu and Wang Yuehu’s team from the Kunming Institute of Botany, Chinese Academy of Sciences discovered a new species of agarwood endophytic fungus through agarwood samples collected in Yunnan.
Based on the analysis of morphology and phylogeny, it was finally identified as two new species of the genus Carbonaceous-Nemania aquilariae and Nemania yunnanensis.
After further analysis of the components of the two new species of fermentation products, it was found that 4 of the 5 sesquiterpenoids (2~5, Figure 1) produced by C.
agaricus were the volatile components of agarwood, which indicates that Agarwood carbon cushion fungus has the potential to catalyze the aroma formation of white wood incense.
At the same time, the research also optimized the liquid fermentation conditions of Agarwood carbonaceous bacteria, and selected three culture media (MEB, PDB and RB) suitable for cultivating high-quality and high-yield Agarwood carbon cushion bacteria.
This study revealed the interaction between endophytic fungi metabolites and host plants, laying a foundation for the application of endophytic fungi to build aroma and the use of endophytic fungi to promote aroma quality.
The paper was published in the LIFE journal with the title "Volatile constituents of endophytic fungi isolated from Aquilaria sinensis with descriptions of two new species of Nemania".
