99.999%: China's refinery produces high-purity hydrogen for the first time

The cost of hydrogen is one of the bottlenecks in the commercialization of fuel cell vehicles.

In order to further reduce costs and promote the development of the hydrogen energy industry, Dalian (Fushun) Petrochemical Research Institute, Guangzhou (Luoyang) Engineering Company, and Gaoqiao Petrochemical, affiliated to Sinopec, formed a joint research team to use hydrogen by-product from the low-cost refining system as raw material.

The first set of demonstration devices was successfully applied in Gaoqiao Petrochemical, and the results of the operation showed the advantages of low investment, small footprint, low energy consumption, etc.

Gaoqiao Petrochemical is located in Shanghai’s Pudong New Area.

It is understood that Sinopec has accelerated its deployment in the hydrogen energy industry in recent years, and has carried out work in various fields such as hydrogen refueling stations, hydrogen production technology, hydrogen fuel cells, and hydrogen storage materials.
Sinopec's hydrogen production in 2019 exceeded 3 million tons, accounting for about 14% of the country's hydrogen production; several oil-hydrogen combined demonstration stations have been built and put into use in Guangdong, Zhejiang, Shanghai and other places.
As a strategic partner of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, Sinopec has also cooperated with the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee on the supply of hydrogen energy.
