According to telephone network provider O2, upgrading UK cities with 5G technology could save £6 billion a year by making them smarter and more connected
.
5G technology is expected to save the UK £6 billion a year
O2 says 5G technology could save homes up to £450 a year in energy costs
.
These cost savings can be realized
by introducing a 5G smart grid.
Smart grids are able to automatically purchase energy at the cheapest time, giving consumers the opportunity to sell electricity to the grid and allowing consumers to buy gas and electricity from a wider range of sources, including energy from neighbors and local businesses
.
Thanks to the 5G smart grid's ability to withstand large-scale charging of electric vehicles, car owners could save £1,600 a year in fuel costs
.
O2 said the city's transport infrastructure and road management systems will also be improved, reducing commute times and emissions
.
In addition, local councils can collectively save around £2.
9 billion a year through more efficient waste collection and the adoption of smart LED street lighting
.
O2 also shows that smart devices like refrigerators will significantly help reduce food waste and energy use
.
Derek McManus, COO of O2, said: "It is clear from our report that 5G technology will play an important role
in ensuring that all citizens have access to the mobile services they deserve.
While 5G promises a range of unprecedented benefits, we should be clear that these will not be possible
without collective investment and cooperation.
