Materials supplier BASF, design and engineering firm Flex-N-Gate, Toyota and pultrusion specialist L&L Products have been awarded the prestigious Altair Enlighten Award for their achievement in vehicle weight reduction for the 2022 Toyota Tundra's composite seat back desi.
"Pultrusion technology has allowed us to design a seat structure that is 20 percent lighter than previous models and meet our cost targets," said Vik Bhatia, manager of the Engineering Design Chassis Group at Toyo.

Hank Richardson, Product Engineering Manager for L&L Products, said: "Through this partnership, we were able to reduce the use of an all-steel assembly consisting of 60 stamped and welded parts and consolidate them into four composite parts, thereby reducing the need for metal seat structur.
"We continue to demonstrate the ability of pultrusion technology to provide lightweight, economical solutions with comprehensive functionality," said Kipp Grumm, Head of Thermoplastic Composites Technology at BASF's Performance Materials Divisi.
