The Chinese and Zimbabwean governments signed the Zimbabwe Citrus Export Protocol to China in January this year
    .
Although the General Administration of Customs of China has not yet implemented access to Zimbabwe citrus, according to the English version of Xinhuanet, Zimbabwe citrus is expected to enter the Chinese market as early as this year
    .

Europe is the main export market for Zimbabwe’s citrus, with a total of 49,358 tons of Zimbabwe citrus exports in 2019, of which about 84% was shipped to Europe
    .
China imports up to 1 million tons of citrus products each year, with a total value of about US$594 million, half of which come from South Africa (27%) and Australia (24%), two southern hemisphere countries
    .
Because Zimbabwe is located in the southern hemisphere, which complements the Chinese production season, and the local savannah climate is very suitable for citrus growth, Zimbabwe is very optimistic about the Chinese market
    .

Zimbabwe's citrus planting area once reached 10,000 hectares, and currently only 3,000 hectares of citrus orchards are exported
    .
In order to export more products to the Chinese market, Zimbabwe is now calling on farmers to plant citrus and increase overall production
    .

It took about 7 years before and after the signing of the Zimbabwe Citrus Export Protocol to China
    .
As early as 2015, Zimbabwe provided the General Administration of Customs of China with information on pest risk assessment for exporting fresh citrus
    .
In December 2017, a Zimbabwean delegation visited China and signed an agreement to purchase 45,000 tons of citrus
    .
In 2018, Chinese experts went to Zimbabwe to conduct risk analysis.
After three years of repeated communication and coordination, the two sides finally signed the protocol in January 2022
    .
The export agreement will allow Zimbabwe to export citrus fruits including oranges, mandarins, lemons, limes, tangerines and grapefruits to China
    .

Zou Xiaoming, Commercial Counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Zimbabwe, said that the protocol is the first trade commodity protocol between China and Zimbabwe
    .

The Horticultural Development Council of Zimbabwe (HDCZ) is very confident in the Chinese market.
CEO Linda Nielson said in an interview with Xinhua that this year will be the first year for Zimbabwe to export to China.
