Why does the dog tilt its head? |
Of all the cute things that dogs do, looking at you with your head tilted may be the cutest
.
However, surprisingly, few people have studied why they do this
Now, a new study on "genius" dogs shows that those dogs that can quickly remember multiple toy names often tilt their heads before retrieving a specific toy correctly
.
The research team believes that this suggests that this behavior may be a sign of concentration and recall in dogs
Researchers came up with this discovery by accident when they were studying dogs with "talent for language learning
.
" Most dogs can't even remember the names of two toys, but these clever puppies-all border collies-can recall the names of at least 10 toys that have been taught
Over several months, the researchers tested the dogs' ability to learn and recall toy tags, and compared their skills with 33 "typical" dogs
.
The owner of the toy put the toy in another room and asked the dog to bring it by name
The research leader, Andrea Sommese, an animal behavior researcher at Roland University in Hungary, said that this pattern is too consistent and cannot be a pure coincidence
.
"So we decided to study in depth
Researchers reported in the recently published "Animal Cognition" that in dozens of experiments, when asked to retrieve toy dogs, 43% of dogs would raise their heads, compared to only 2 for ordinary dogs.
%
.
(Although exceptionally gifted dogs tilt their heads more frequently, they are equally likely to retrieve the correct toy regardless of whether they make this action or not
Moreover, dogs even prefer the side with their heads tilted, just as humans prefer their left or right hands
.
In the records of several months, this is consistent no matter where the owner is standing in the dog
In the next step, Sommese hopes to continue this research and figure out what sounds might have a similar meaning to untalented dogs and induce the same behavior
.
Now, the owner of the dog knows that when the dog tilts its head, it may just try to understand what you are doing
