For hundreds of years, people have observed that the severity of asthma tends to worsen at night
"This is the first study to carefully separate the behaviors that affect the physiological system and other factors of the environment, including sleep
As many as 75% of asthma patients—20 million in the United States—report that their asthma worsens at night
In order to distinguish the circadian rhythm system from the influence of sleep and other behavioral and environmental factors, the researchers recruited 17 asthma patients (they did not take steroids, but when they felt their asthma symptoms worsened, they did use bronchodilators ), including two supplementary laboratory protocols to continuously evaluate lung function, asthma symptoms, and bronchodilator use
