    In order to distinguish the circadian rhythm system from the influence of sleep and other behavioral and environmental factors, the researchers recruited 17 asthma patients (they did not take steroids, but when they felt their asthma symptoms worsened, they did use bronchodilators ), including two supplementary laboratory protocols to continuously evaluate lung function, asthma symptoms, and bronchodilator use
