At the time of the new crown pandemic, there is a question that has remained unresolved

This international study analyzed the genetic factors that determine the severity of human new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) infection and new coronary pneumonia (COVID-19) disease, and identified 13 new ones related to susceptibility and disease severity.

A number of previous studies have shown that factors such as men, heavier weight, and older age can increase the severity of the disease in patients with COVID-19, but these risk factors alone cannot explain the various changes in the severity of the disease

Host genetics has been shown to play an important role in the susceptibility and severity of infectious diseases (including respiratory viruses)

The "COVID-19 Host Genetics Project" was founded in March 2020 by Andrea Ganna and Mark Daly of the Finnish Institute of Molecular Medicine, the University of Helsinki, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Broad Institute of Harvard University

The research team found that some of the loci identified this time overlap with the loci previously associated with autoimmune diseases, inflammatory diseases, or lung diseases

The research team also highlighted one of them, which is located near the FOXP4 gene associated with lung cancer

Other gene loci associated with severe COVID-19 include DPP9 (also related to lung cancer and pulmonary fibrosis) and TYK2 (related to some autoimmune diseases)

They concluded that this international cooperation has identified new host genetic factors related to COVID-19 at an unprecedented speed, and will continue to collect data to bring the scale and diversity of the lineage covered by the analysis to a higher level
