In order to further improve the level of classification and management of medical waste, and realize the harmlessness, reduction and scientificization of medical waste disposal, the National Health Commission and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment revised the 2003 version of the catalog, and the 2021 version of the catalog will be released on November 25, 2021.

The 2021 version of the catalog continues the original five categories and characteristics of medical waste, adds classification management requirements, collection methods, and exemption management under corresponding conditions, and clearly stipulates some controversial classification standards and disposal methods.
