An extensive meta-analysis suggests that vitamin D supplementation reduces depressive symptoms in adults with depressio.
Depressive symptoms contribute to a significant disease burden worldwid.
Vitamin D is thought to regulate central nervous system function, and disorders of the central nervous system are associated with depressio.
This new meta-analysis of the relationship between vitamin D supplementation and depression is the largest ever published and includes results from 41 studies from around the worl.
Lead author Tuomas Mikola, PhD researcher at the University of Eastern Finland's Institute of Clinical Medicine, said: "Despite the broad scope of this meta-analysis, the certainty of the evidence is due to the heterogeneity of the study population and the risk of bias associated with the large number of studie.
"These findings will encourage new, high-level clinical trials in people with depression to further shed light on the possible role of vitamin D supplementation in the treatment of depression," concluded Mikol.
This meta-analysis was conducted with an international collaboration of researchers in Finland, Australia and the United State.
