Zebrafish are infected with the fluorescent bacterium Mycobacterium abscessus (red)
Mycobacterium abscesses is a close relative of the bacteria that cause tuberculosis and leprosy.
Previously, a research team from the University of Pittsburgh discovered a bacteriophage named "Muddy" from 10,000 bacteriophages.
First, they need to understand the response of these cystic fibrosis zebrafish to Mycoplasma abscesses infection
Then, the author looked for an antibiotic to pair with Muddy and found that rifabutin can treat Mycoplasma abscesses infection as effectively as phage alone
Researchers have proven that it is possible to treat antibiotic-resistant infections in fragile zebrafish with specially targeted phages, and they hope that this treatment will eventually be transferred to clinics and begin to save human lives
