5 infection over 8 months.
The study showed that the mixed immunity established after vaccination and first infection with the new coronavirus was able to avoid repeated infection with Omicron BA.
5, a protective effect that lasted for at least 8 months
.
In September 2022, the team published a paper in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), and in January and February 2022, Portugal welcomed the first wave of Omicron infections, and in June, Portugal welcomed a new wave of Omicron BA.
5 strains
.
The results of the study showed that people who were previously vaccinated against the new crown and infected with Omicron in the first wave were largely spared the second wave of Omicron BA.
5 infection
.
That is to say, the mixed immunity brought by vaccination and infection with Omicron can effectively prevent superinfection, But the long-term stability of this protective effect is unclear
.
In the latest study, published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, the research team noted that in September 2022, they observed the first (January 2022) breakthrough infections with Omicron to Omicron The BA.
5 strain is about 4 times
more protective than people who have only been vaccinated but have never been infected.
This shows the importance of
hybrid immunization in preventing superinfection.
Moreover, this protection from vaccination and first infection is stable and can last for at least 8 months
.
Like previous studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM), the team used data from Portugal's national COVID-19 case registration prior to September 2022, when Portugal required the registration of all coronavirus infections at that time.
The data is therefore particularly comprehensive
.
The research team selected information
on all coronavirus cases in people over 12 years of age.
These data allow conclusions to be drawn about hybrid immunization, since at the end of 2021 Portugal had a vaccination rate of up to 98%.
From these data, the research team calculated the risk of repeat infection over time in people who had previously received the new crown vaccine and were infected during the first wave of the Omicron epidemic, and thus came up with the effect of mixed immunity against repeated infection, showing that 8 months after the first Omicron infection, there is still a high protective effect
against repeated infection.
Compared to vaccinated but not infected, people who were vaccinated and infected with Omicron initially had protection against Omicron superinfection of about 90%, dropping to 70% after 5 months and stabilizing at around
65% after 8 months.
This suggests that the hybrid immunity established by vaccinated people after the first infection is fairly stable and able to protect against Omicron superinfection
for a long time.
This study suggests that vaccination and Omicron infection provides additional protection against Omicron reinfection compared with vaccination alone, and that this protection is stable in the long term
