USPSTF recommends against use of hormone therapy to prevent chronic disease

The US Preventive Services Task Force does not recommend the use of estrogen in combination with progesterone or estrogen alone for primary prevention of chronic disease in postmenopausal patients

Gerald Gartlehner, MD, MPH, RTI International University, Center for Evidence-Based Practice, Research Triangle Park, UNC-Chapel Hill, and colleagues update the effectiveness of hormone therapy in reducing the risk of chronic disease in postmenopausal women evidence

Based on these findings, the USPSTF recommends postmenopausal women who have undergone hysterectomy for the primary prevention of chronic disease using combined estrogen and progesterone (Recommendation D), and postmenopausal women using estrogen alone for the primary prevention of chronic disease.
