    A pair of somites

The spine is the central support structure of all vertebrate skeletons

The spine consists of 33 vertebrae that form pairs of precursor structures called vertebral bodies

"This is the first time that we have been able to create periodic human maturation pairs associated with segmented clocks in the laboratory," said Marina Sanaki-Matsumiya, first author of the study

Create a robust process of somatogenesis

The team cultured human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) in the presence of a cocktail of signaling molecules that induced the cells to differentiate

To test whether the segmentation clock regulates somatogenesis in these somatic-like cells, the researchers monitored the expression patterns of the core gene HES7 involved in this process

Ebisuya's team looked at how and why humans differ from other species in embryonic development

The current study also shows a link between the size of somites and the division clock

To investigate this further, Miki Ebisuya and her team are planning to grow somatic-like cells from different species and compare them

"Our next project will focus on creating somatic-like cells from different species and measuring their cell proliferation and cell migration rates to determine how and how somagenesis differs between species," Ebisuya said
