Foreign media news on October 18: The Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture issued a report on Tuesday, raising the sown area of winter wheat harvested in 2023 to 4 million hectares, higher than the previous forecast of 3.
    8 million hectares
    .

As of October 18, Ukrainian farmers had sown 2.
5 million hectares of winter wheat, equivalent to 61 percent
of the expected area, according to the ministry.
    For comparison, 5 million hectares
were sown in the same period last year.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture did not give a reason for the year-on-year delay in
    the sown area.
Local officials and analysts cited rainfall and lack of funding in much of the country as the main reasons for the
    delay.

The area sown with winter wheat in Ukraine in 2022 was more than 6 million hectares
    .
However, due to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and other reasons, only 460 hectares of wheat
    have been harvested so far.
Ukraine's state weather forecasting agency said this week that less than three percent of the winter cereals planted this year were sown at the optimal time due to poor weather, significantly lower than in previous years
    .
In addition, crops sown in October may enter winter at the beginning of development, making crops vulnerable to adverse winter conditions
    .

Ukraine's agriculture ministry said last week that farmers had completed the 2022 wheat harvest with 19.
2 million mt, down from 32.
    2 million mt
    in 2021.

Ukraine's 2023 wheat harvest could fall to 16-18 million tons
due to an expected decline in winter wheat sowing area, First Deputy Minister of Agriculture Taras-Vysotsky said last month.
