American scientists have invented the whitest paint so far, which can be applied to the roof of a building to have the function of cooling down

This invention was recently included in the Guinness World Records in 2022

As early as the 1970s, some researchers made some attempts to invent a very white paint, believing that this method can also cool the house, which would be a more environmentally friendly method than using air conditioners
.
Xiulin Ruan, a professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue University in the United States, led his students to continue the research on this subject
.
They tried a total of more than 100 materials, and finally screened the remaining 10 key points for testing, and tried at least 50 different formulations for each material
.
The final material introduced by this research group not only reflects 98.
1% of solar radiation, but also emits infrared radiation to dissipate heat
.
Since the heat emitted by this paint is higher than the heat absorbed from the sun, its surface temperature will be lower than the ambient temperature
.
The most common white paint currently on the market will still heat up in the sun
.
These materials generally can only reflect 80%-90% of the sunlight, which is not enough to make the surface temperature lower than the temperature of the environment

Ruan Xiulin said that if this kind of paint is applied to a 1,000-square-foot roof, the cooling effect is similar to that of a 10-kilowatt air conditioner

According to the research, on the one hand, this material uses barium sulfate used in photo paper and cosmetics as a white pigment, which does not absorb ultraviolet rays; on the other hand, they make barium sulfate into small particles of various sizes.

Because particles of different sizes reflect light of different wavelengths, the pigment particles of different sizes used in this paint can reflect a wide range of light in the solar spectrum
