Nortriptyline hydrochloride, also known as Noritropyline, is a tricyclic antidepressant drug that is used to treat a variety of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
In the chemical industry, it is used as an intermediate in the production of other pharmaceuticals and chemicals.
Upstream Products
One of the upstream products used in the production of Nortriptyline hydrochloride is p-chloraniline.
This chemical is synthesized by treating chloroform with a mixture of sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide.
The resulting compound is then nitrated with nitric acid to produce p-chloraniline.
Another upstream product used in the production of Nortriptyline hydrochloride is 2,6-dimethylphenylamine.
This compound is synthesized by reducing 2,6-dichlorophenylamine with sodium in ethanol.
The resulting compound is then nitrated with nitric acid to produce 2,6-dimethylphenylamine.
Downstream Products
One of the major downstream products of Nortriptyline hydrochloride is the antidepressant drug Prozac (fluoxetine).
Prozac is synthesized by treating 2-fluoro-5-nitrophenylamine with hydrogen in the presence of palladium on barium sulfate.
The resulting compound is then converted into 2-fluoro-5-methylphenylamine by treating it with potassium hydroxide.
This compound is then transformed into fluoxetine by further chemical reactions.
Another downstream product of Nortriptyline hydrochloride is the antipsychotic drug Thorazine (chlorpromazine).
Thorazine is synthesized by treating 2-chloro-1,3-benzoxazepine with nitric acid.
The resulting compound is then converted into chlorpromazine by treating it with sodium hydroxide and methanol.
In addition to Prozac and Thorazine, Nortriptyline hydrochlor
