    Team of Chen Xingdong Youth Researchers of Fudan University's Institute of Human Esophageal Group and Associate Professor Zhang Tiejun of the Department of Epidemiology of the School of Public Health have made important progress in studying the incidence patterns and main causes of liver cancer in different parts of the world. The findings were published in the Journal of Hecpathy in the form of a cover article. The magazine also issued editor-in-chief reviews at the same time and selected the study as "Choose of Month".
    latest data from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), there will be more than 840,000 new liver cancer deaths worldwide in 2018, with about 780,000 deaths from liver cancer. Of these, about half of the new cases of liver cancer occur in China. Up to now, a variety of factors have been confirmed as risk factors for liver cancer, including hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), alcohol and aflatoxin. Worldwide, the incidence of liver cancer varies widely from region to region, for example, more than 60% of liver cancer in China is caused by HBV infection, while the main cause in neighboring Japan is HCV infection.
    , it is important to understand the incidence patterns of liver cancer in different regions for the precise prevention of liver cancer and the choice of treatment options.
    Chen Xingdong told China Science that the study used data from the Global Burden of Disease Study (GBD 2016) to systematically analyze liver cancer patterns in 195 countries and regions between 1990 and 2016. The study found that HBV infection remains the leading cause of liver cancer worldwide, accounting for more than 40%, in East Asia and West Africa, the proportion of more than 50%;
    further analysis of changes in liver cancer incidence trends, researchers found that worldwide, HCV-related liver cancer incidence rate increased the fastest, while alcohol-related liver cancer at a stable level. The incidence of liver cancer caused by different regions and causes is obviously heterogeneous. In low- and middle-income countries, liver cancer is on the decline, mainly because the region effectively controls HBV infection, while in high-income North America, HBV-related liver cancer is growing fastest, consistent with an increase in local HBV infection rates. In Eastern Europe, liver cancer as a whole is on the rise, with the fastest increase in the incidence of alcohol-related liver cancer, which is associated with the high alcohol intake of the population of the region. This study systematically analyzes the changes in the incidence pattern of liver cancer in the past 30 years, expounds the key direction of liver cancer prevention and treatment in different regions, and has great public health significance.
