recently, a team of international researchers found 301 different gene signals in 183 gene locations in non-European populations linked to type 2 diabetes in East Asians. Sixty-one of them are newly discovered site associated with type 2 diabetes. Previous genome-wide association studies of people of European descent did not involve these genes. For example, they found new diabetes risk associations near genes GDAP1, PTF1A, SIX3, ALDH2, and genes that affect muscle and fat differentiation. At another point, the researchers found two overlapping signals of the type 2 diabetes gene, which appear to work in different tissues through the NKX6-3 and ANK1 genes.
We know that diabetes is caused by a complex set of risk factors, such as body mass index, which have different effects on the development of diabetes in people of different descents," said Xueling Sim of the National University of Singapore. These findings expand the number of genetic variants associated with diabetes and emphasize the importance of studying different lineages.
