Experiment 19 The roots of sunflowers and wheat
(i) the straight roots of sunflowerscarefully pull the seedlings of helianthus annuus (seedlings about a month old with two real leaves) out of the sand and gently rinse the attached sand in the water, paying attention not to damage and lose the fine side roots as much as possible. Then the washed root system floats in a shallow pond porcelain plate with water (for easy observation, lay a black background on the bottom of the plate), with reference to Figure 19-1 will be the root system organized, as follows observation: first distinguish the main root and side root, calculate how many side roots occurred from the main root, side root and the main root into a large angle. Count the number of secondary side roots that grow on a first-level side root. What level of side root is the smallest side root of the sunflower seedlings you observe? What is the shape of the whole root of a sunflower? What root system should it belong to? Finally, the width and depth (long) degree of the root system are measured by a meter ruler.(ii) The main root of the root of the wheatafter the embryo root has grown and ceases to grow, and many indeterrite roots are produced by the joints of the embryo shaft and the lower part of the stem. The main root and the indeterminary root together form the root system, the length and weight of each root are not much different, there is no obvious main root, forming a fairly uniform system (Figure 19-2), the plant firmly anchored to the surface of the soil. The root system of sand-cultivated wheat seedlings (one month of seedling age) was observed according to the method of observing sunflower root system. What is the difference between comparing wheat roots with sunflower roots? Can you tell the difference between the main root and the indeterrite root? Where does the wheat's erratic roots come from?
