by researchers at The Royal College london, found that patients who survived sepsis had a risk of death of up to five years.study, published today at the JAMA Network Open, found that 15 per cent of sepsis survivors die within a year of leaving hospital and 6 to 8 per cent each year for the next five years.Theteam analysed data on 94,748 sepsis survivors who recovered after being admitted to 200 intensive care units in the UK and wanted to understand the long-term risk of death of sepsis survivors in England to identify risk factors and tell clinicians how best to monitor sepsis survivors after they leave hospital."This is the first report to use UK national data to confirm the long-term risk of death for sepsis survivors. We now know the severity of this long-term risk of death among sepsis survivors," explains Dr. Manu Shankar-Hari, a clinician at the National Institutes of Health.he continued, "Being able to identify the patients at the highest risk is critical for us as clinicians because it helps plan ongoing care." Given what we now know, we will try to identify the best interventions to prevent these deaths and how to identify the survivors of sepsis who are most at risk and are more likely to benefit from these interventions. More , the new study provides the health policy debate with general information on how to plan follow-up care for survivors of sepsis and major diseases. Sepsisis a serious complication of infection. It occurs when the body enters a state of overspeed due to infection. Without rapid treatment, it can lead to multiple organ failure and death. According to the British Sepsis Trust, there are about 250,000 cases of sepsis in the UK each year. (Compiled by this web)
