A new Australian study shows that American military strongholds have creatures older than dinosaurs, British media say.
The Star daily reported on January 20th that scientists believe that mineralized microorganisms contained in the Pentagon's stone are 340 million years old.
, these ancient microbes are believed to be key to figuring out how microbes affect life on Earth.
scientist Bob Byrne confirmed: "We have a very different theory of the origin of the granules, explaining their decisive function.
" he said: "Our results highlight another key role that microbes play to the planet and in our lives.
" reported that the Pentagon is not the only well-known building that may contain microbes found in the limestone.
are believed to contain these ancient microbes in the stone used to build the Empire State Building, Buckingham Palace and even St Paul's Cathedral.
Byrne added: "Many of the limestones are fine architectural stones because they are strong and light.
Britain built Buckingham Palace, most of Bath, the British Museum and St Paul's Cathedral with Jurassic grain rock.
" study, carried out by the Australian National University, published this month in the British journal Scientific Reports.
