U.S. researchers said Tuesday they have found a new way to stop pain at its root, promising to relieve pain caused by chemotherapy for cancer.
    new study, published in
, shows that injecting a natural protein, the lipoprotein A-I binding protein, into the spinal cord in mice inhibits and reverses inflammatory responses and cellular activity associated with the pain-producing process. The pain relief effect lasted about two months and did not affect the movement of mice.
the researchers explained that the lipoprotein A-I binding protein had previously been used to treat atherosclerosis. New research suggests it can also suppress toll-like subject 4, which is located on the surface of a cell and can "search" like an antenna for signs of infection or tissue damage, which is associated with pain.
, co-author of the study and a professor in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, said opioids only suppress pain, and the sources of pain remain. Their approach "inhibits the underlying mechanisms that cause pain, rather than masking symptoms" and "actually changes the process itself." (Source: Xinhua Zhouzhou)
