A new study led by The University of Australia in Edith Cowan says adherence to the Mediterranean diet can significantly slow the build-up of beta amyloid protein in the brain and help delay the onset of Alzheimer's disease by several years.
Mediterranean diet is based on a rich diet of fruits and vegetables, fish, grains and nuts, mainly popular in mediterranean coastal countries. Alzheimer's disease is a common form of dementia, with symptoms including memory impairment, adaffles, and personality and behavioral changes. One of the main causes of the disease is the excessive accumulation of beta amyloid protein in the brain, according to the study.
previous studies have shown that sticking to a Mediterranean diet can slow cognitive decline, researchers said in a paper published in the latest issue of the British journal Translational Psychiatry. For the first time, the study found that sticking to a Mediterranean diet significantly slowed the build-up of beta amyloid protein in the brain.
Lead author dr Stephanie Rennie-Smith, of Edith Cowan University, said that among the elements of the Mediterranean diet, large intakes of fruit had the greatest impact on slowing the accumulation of beta amyloid protein. (Source: Xinhua News Agency, Guo yang)
