The mechanism of linkage selection affecting genome variation revealed |
The research team of Baosheng Wang, a researcher at the South China Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, together with Par Ingvarsson, a professor at the Swedish Agricultural University, and Christophe Plomion, a professor at the French Academy of Agricultural Sciences, revealed the mechanism of linkage selection affecting genome variation

There are abundant genetic variations within and between species in nature
.
The mechanism of the generation and maintenance of these mutations has always been a research hotspot in the fields of genetics and evolutionary biology
Researchers from the South China Botanical Garden took three Quercus species distributed in China: Quercus acutissima, Quercus variabilis, and Quercus variabilis as the research objects.
They sequenced the whole genome of more than 100 individuals and obtained more than 16 million SNP sites
.
Population history analysis found that the differentiation time between these three species began in the late Miocene, after which each species experienced a series of bottleneck effects during the Pleistocene glacial period
Through joint analysis of multiple population genetic parameters and computer simulations, the researchers confirmed that selective clearance and background selection are important forces that lead to genomic variation, and their relative roles in different genomic regions are different
.
Selective clearance reduces the level of genetic diversity around favorable mutation sites, and promotes the generation of highly differentiated regions of the interspecies genome; background selection has a more extensive influence on genomic variation, and determines the background variation pattern of the genome
This study reveals the relative role of different selection modes in the generation and maintenance of genetic variation
