The World Health Organization and UNICEF promote exclusive breastfeeding as the best form of feeding within six months of birth, which is important for reducing neonatal mortality and an important measure to ensure the health and survival of children. The protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding has been made an important part of maternal and child health efforts.
the current situation of breastfeeding in China is not optimistic, breastfeeding rate is much lower than in developed countries in Europe and the United States. China has an annual birth population of 16 million, of which the absolute number of premature babies ranks second in the world. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the European Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Hepatology, and the American Association of Family Physicians all strongly recommend breast-feeding for premature babies, preferring to be pro-breast milk, and second for donor milk, while formula for premature babies is a helpless choice when no one is breastfed. A large number of studies have shown that breastfeeding is beneficial to reduce infection, necrotize small intestine colitis, shorten hospital stay, long-term can promote neurocognitive development of infants, reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome, has the importance of improving short-term and long-term outcomes.
The current international consensus recommends parental breastfeeding as the preferred option, but when the mother cannot breastfeed due to illness and medication or breast milk is insufficient, the choice of donor milk is the best alternative. At present, developed countries and some developing countries have established human milk bank, and set up the North American Breast Milk Bank Association, the European Breast Milk Bank Association and other academic organizations. In recent years, the domestic has also set up more than ten family milk bank. In order to study the composition and function of human milk more widely and deeply, and to apply donor milk more standardizedly, so as to benefit more Chinese children, the Chinese Nutrition Society, under the care and guidance of Chairman Yang Yuxin, set up the Chinese Breast Research and Application Project Group. The project team is chaired by Professor Su Yixiang, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Nutrition Society, professor Wang Danhua, Paediatrics, Beijing Concord Hospital, Executive Director of the Chinese Nutrition Society, Professor Wang Zhixuan, Chairman of the Women's and Children's Nutrition Branch, Professor Lai Jianqiang, Deputy Director of the Nutrition and Health Institute of the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and Deputy Director of the Virus Institute of the China Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The meeting began with a speech by Deputy Secretary-General Du Songming of the Chinese Nutrition Society and announced the establishment of the Human Milk Research and Application Project Group of the Chinese Nutrition Society. Professor Wang Danhua put forward his thoughts and prospects on the research and application of human milk, combined with feeding guidelines and recommendations, the challenges faced by Chinese milk bank, etc., to analyze the opportunities and prospects in the field of human milk research. Professor Wang pointed out that the safety of donor milk is very important, from the human milk donor screening, collection, processing, sub-packing, the use of all aspects of the need to ensure the safety of donor milk. Promoting the construction of human milk bank requires multidisciplinary participation, including clinical, nutritional, microbiology, food safety and food processing, which is very meaningful with the support of the Chinese Academy of Nutrition. Professor Lai Jianqiang reported on the research on human milk composition and china's breastfeeding data, and stressed that "breast milk is a transmission of love full of health power", the future work of the project team has positive social significance, and will promote the rate of breastfeeding in China. Li Zhenghong, deputy director of pediatrics at Concord Hospital in Beijing, introduced the situation of human milk bank at home and abroad, and put forward that the application needs of donor milk come from clinical, and that the development of human milk research and application should be clinical and research, and promote each other. At the meeting, all the members discussed the direction of the work of the project team and the work plan for 2018, formulated the time and form of academic activities to be carried out in the coming year, and planned the future scientific research work to be carried out. Members agreed that the work objectives of the Human Milk Research and Application Project Group have a long way to go and that, under the leadership and support of the Chinese Academy of Nutrition, we will actively work to play an important role in the implementation of the National Nutrition Plan (2017-2030).
