Neotame, a zero-calorie sweetener developed and produced by NutraSweet of the United States, has been licensed by the European Commission to be used in the European Union since 12 January 2010.
this approval was published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 23 December 2009 as a modification of the 94/35/EC Directive.
the sweetener is a derivative of the aspartame sweetener.
it's about 8,000 times sweeter than sugar, 30 to 60 times sweeter than Abbas sweeteners, and has a sugary taste but no calories.
manufacturers asked the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) as early as 2003 for a safety evaluation of the product, and the EFSA issued an opinion in September 2007 that new sweeteners were not carcinogenic and non-hereditary or reproductive.
the use of the sweetener in the United States in 2002 was relatively late.
committee of experts on food additives from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) has long been the green light.
