China Agricultural University recently said that its research team found that guar bean gum-based films have a larger potential application range
in food.
Petroleum-based plastics are the most commonly used packaging film for food, however, the burning of petroleum-based plastics releases some dangerous chemicals
.
As a result, researchers have been looking for renewable, low-toxicity materials for the development of biodegradable films to partially replace petroleum-based plastics
.
Guar gum has some potential
for use in the development of packaging films or coatings.
In recent years, the technical means used to improve the physical and functional properties of guar gum-based films have been improved, broadening the application range
of films of this material in food.
The modification of guar gum, the introduction of plasticizers, mixing with other polymers, layer-by-layer assembly technology, and the introduction of nanoparticles, plant extracts and essential oils can effectively improve the physical properties of guar gum-based films, including hydrophilic, mechanical and barrier properties
.
In addition, many active substances, such as plant extracts, essential oils and metal nanoparticles, can be used to prepare guar gum-based active films
with excellent antioxidant and antibacterial properties.
Guerr bean gum-based film can be used for the storage and preservation of fruits, vegetables, snacks, livestock products and aquatic products, and the addition of some antioxidants and antibacterial agents can further improve its fresh-keeping effect
.
As a biodegradable and low-toxicity biomacropolymer, guar gum has shown certain potential
in partially replacing petroleum-based food packaging polymer materials.
In addition, pigments sensitive to volatile amines are added to guar gum-based films, which can be used to prepare smart films
that sense the freshness of food.
