One of the best ways to combat herbicide resistance is to alternate active ingredients, for which Syngenta has launched Erebus Xtreme .
This is a new cross-lineage herbicide designed to help grain growers control herbicide-resistant wild oats .
Erebus Xtreme, a premixed liquid formulation of the two active ingredients fensulam (Group 2) and fluroxypyr (Group 2), is registered for use in wheat, winter wheat and durum wheat and will be available in western Canadian farms this spring.

It's yet another useful tool for grain growers looking for different chemicals to control herbicide-resistant weeds, Baer noted

While Erebus Xtreme should not be used in wild oats against Group 2 actives, there are other options in Syngenta's portfolio with different actives, Baer said

Another major weed controlled by Erebus Xtreme is Japanese bromegrass

This is an invasive species found primarily in brown and dark brown soil areas of southern Saskatchewan and Alberta

"Japanese bromegrass isn't as widespread as wild oats throughout the West, but it's definitely a weed that growers want to control across the [southern prairie belt]," Baer said

"We didn't control the brand of Japanese bromegrass before, which is why we launched Erebus Xtreme

The herbicide can be applied from the crop's four-leaf stage all the way through to flag leaves, helping farmers manage other challenging grasses and broadleaf weeds such as groundgrass, wild buckwheat, hogweed and weasel petals

Baer added that the Erebus Xtreme's label has no regrowing restrictions, meaning farmers can sow most major crops grown in western Canada on fields that have used the herbicide the previous year
