| Study to identify epigenetic characteristics unique to identical twins |
Identical twins have a specific epigenetic feature in their DNA, which lasts from conception to adulthood

This discovery provides insights into the biological mechanisms surrounding the conception of identical twins
It is estimated that 12% of pregnancies start with multiple births, but only 2% will eventually give birth
.
This is called vanishing twin syndrome
Jenny van Dongen, Dorret Boomsma and colleagues at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the Netherlands, studied several large international twin arrays to identify the unique epigenetic characteristics of identical twins
.
They found an epigenetic feature common in all identical twins, which lasts from conception to adulthood
Studies have also shown that using this feature allows them to identify whether an individual was born as identical twins at the time of conception, even if they were not born as twins in the end
.
It is not yet clear whether this epigenetic feature has any biological consequences for identical twins, and further research is needed
