Autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia spectrum disorder are two typical neurodevelopmental disorders More and more research evidence shows that although the age of onset of these two disorders is different, there are a lot of similarities in pathogenic genes, cognitive, emotional and social defects At the same time, autism spectrum disorders and schizophrenia spectrum disorders still have comorbidity, the relationship between them needs further study Behavioral response inhibition is a common behavior problem in children with autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia spectrum disorder However, it is not clear whether their behavioral response inhibition defects are similar or different cognitive processes Postdoctoral researcher Shi Lijuan and researcher Chen Chuqiao from the laboratory of neuropsychology and Applied Cognitive Neuroscience (NaCN), the Key Laboratory of mental health, Institute of psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, conducted a study to investigate the response inhibition of autistic children and schizophrenic children In this study, 23 autistic boys, 23 schizophrenic boys and 32 normal boys were recruited The children were measured by auditory response inhibition, speech response inhibition and visual response inhibition tasks The results show that although autistic boys and schizophrenic boys perform worse than normal developmental boys in auditory response inhibition, speech response inhibition and visual response inhibition tasks, the schizophrenic boys respond more slowly than autistic boys when they operate visual response inhibition tasks, and the rate of missing errors is lower On the other hand, schizophrenic boys were more severely impaired in auditory response inhibition task than autistic boys, and similar to autistic boys in speech response inhibition task The results of this study will help to better distinguish autistic children from schizophrenic children The different patterns of impairment of their response inhibition function will also help researchers to develop more targeted clinical intervention programs in the near future The research is supported by the national key research and development program, the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation, the Ministry of education humanities youth fund and the Key Laboratory of mental health of the Chinese Academy of Sciences The article has been published online in austism research
