a new study by Queen Mary, University of London, shows that Chinese adults have consumed more than 10 grams of salt a day for the past 40 years, more than twice the World Health Organization's recommended amount. Previously, the Chinese government has encouraged the whole society to participate in salt reduction.
In a paper published in the new issue of the Journal of the American Heart Association, researchers at Queen Mary College said they analyzed a large amount of published data on salt intake in China, involving 900 children and 26,000 adults, and found that salt intake among Chinese residents has remained high over the past 40 years, as well as differences between the North and the South.
the average daily intake of salt in northern China was 11.2 grams, down from 12.8 grams in the 1980s, according to a recent study. The researchers believe this includes the Chinese government's efforts to raise awareness of salt reduction between the whole population and the gradual decline in people's dependence on foods such as pickles because of the richness of vegetables through the year.
the downward trend is not in southern China. Salt intake among southerners has increased from an average of 8.8 grams per day in the 1980s to 10.2 grams today. The researchers believe this may be due to government efforts to reduce salt offset by factors such as people eating more processed foods and eating more out.
study also showed that china's salt intake among children aged 3 to 6 years has reached the highest recommended adult salt intake (5 grams per day), while older children's average daily salt intake is close to 9 grams. He Fengjun, co-author of the
paper and a professor at Queen Mary University of London, says that in China, most salt intake comes from home cooking salt, and the current trend is the rapid growth of processed foods, street food, restaurants and various fast food chains, requiring attention to the salt content of related foods.
intake of salt is one of the important factors that cause high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, stroke and other diseases. Previous studies have shown that Chinese residents' salt intake is high and has attracted attention. China's Opinions on
Healthy China Action, released this year, explicitly proposes to encourage the whole society to participate in salt reduction. (Source: Xinhua News Agency, Zhang Jiawei)
