The link between intracranial aneurysms (IAs) and Mafan syndrome (MFS) is disputed.
, researchers aim to assess the prevalence and characteristics of IA in MFS patients using brain imaging and compare it to the general population, according to a recent study published in TheStroke, an authoritative journal in the field of cardiovascular disease.
between 2007 and 2020, the researchers included 118 MFS-diagnosed patients who had under been examined for brain imaging and divided them into two groups, the IA group and the non-IA group.
researchers obtained demographic data from the subjects' medical records, including age, gender, compulsive disorder and aortic disease.
two researchers independently assessed the dosing, morphology, size, and location of all IAs.
the researchers compared all the data between the two groups and analyzed the IA characteristics of MFS patients using a controlled database with IA.
prevalence of IAs was 11.9% in MFS patients, and the age of the IA group was significantly older (IA was 44.6±12.1 years, non-IA was 36.8±14.0 years, P was 0.039), and women were the majority (IA was 71.4%, non-IA was 43.3%, P was 0.047).
IAs were not ruptured and there was no subcab bleeding during follow-up (an average of 53.5±43.3 months).
the average diameter of the IAs is significantly larger (4.23±1.80 mm in MFS, compared with 3.04±1.57 mm in the control and 0.004 in P.
IAs in MFS patients were usually located in the vertebral substrate arteries (33.3% in MFS, 2.1% in the control, P=0.002), and the shuttle was more common (13.3% in MFS, compared with 1.1% in the control and P=0.048).
large-scale queue study proves that MFS patients with IA are more common and differentiated, and that the data may support the association between IA and MFS.
