statins commonly used to fight physical health disorders can bring significant benefits to people with severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or non-emotional psychosis.A large cohort study led by UCL, published in JAMA Psychiatry, found that exposure to any study drug was associated with lower rates of psychiatric hospitalization compared to unexposed periods. In patients with non-emotional psychosis who were exposed to all the drugs studied and took L-type calcium channel antagonists, self-harm decreased in patients with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. In some cases, self-harm rates were reduced by more than 40% in people taking statins or anti-stress drugs, and self-injury rates in diabetes medications were reduced by more than 30%.The study used data from 142,691 patients and focused on patients who took statins to lower cholesterol/heart disease, L-calcium channel antagonists (LTCC), lower high blood pressure, or metformin( such as metformin) to treat diabetes.Assess whether a patient's health record for self-harm and psychiatric hospitalization occurred during or without prescription medication.Lead author Dr Joseph Hayes, of UCL Psychiatry, said: "Severe mental illnesses, including bipolar disorder, are associated with high incidence and are difficult to treat. Many widely used drugs, such as statins, have long been considered to have the potential to reuse these diseases. For the first time, the study used large amounts of population data to compare patients' exposure to these commonly used drugs and their potential impact on people with severe mental illness.
