Sri Lanka’s “Sunday Times” reported on December 12 that the price of imported food will soar in the near future due to the inability of more than 1,000 containers to complete customs clearance at the Port of Colombo due to insufficient foreign exchange .
A spokesperson for the Sri Lanka Food Importers Association told the media that at present, food importers have to line up to exchange foreign currency from banks and cannot clear customs and pay suppliers on time, making it difficult to place orders for more imports .
He said that during the holiday season, there is a large demand for related products.
If the current foreign exchange problem is not resolved as soon as possible, commodity prices will soar .
