Sri Lanka's economic crisis has sparked violent clashes as hundreds of angry people tried to break into President Rajapaksa's official residence

Police fired tear gas and water cannons to disperse the crowd as they protested at President Rajapaksa's residence on the outskirts of the capital Colombo late on Thursday (March 31), Reuters reported
.
"We arrested 54 people during last night's violent clashes .
Demonstrators set fire to several military and police vehicles, including two buses, a jeep and several motorcycles, " said
police spokesman Senior Superintendent Talduwa .
Five police officers were injured and taken to hospital, while no protesters were injured, Erduva said
.
The Sri Lankan government later announced a curfew in the capital Colombo and deployed security forces in Colombo.
The curfew measures were lifted on Friday (April 1)
.
