Sri Lanka's Daily Mirror reported on November 14 that data released by the Sri Lankan Census and Statistics Bureau (DCS) showed that the rice crop area in the 2021/2022 Maha season reached a record 766,000 hectares, but due to the government-imposed ban on chemical fertilizers and agrochemicals, the actual rice production reached only 1.
93 million tons, down 37% from the 2020/2021 Maha season and a new low
in nearly 50 years 。 While the Ministry of Agriculture recommends using a ratio of about 70% synthetic fertilizer and 30% organic fertilizer in the Integrated Fertilizer Production Management Program for optimal yield, the data shows that 61% of rice cultivation used mixed fertilizer
    during this period.

Former President Gotabaya banned the import of agrochemicals, including fertilizers and pesticides, in May 2021 in an effort to drive the transition
    to organic farming.
    But the ban was lifted
in November 2021 due to the government's failure to provide an alternative.
