South Africa has previously announced that it will suspend anti-dumping duties on chicken imports from Brazil and four EU countries (Denmark, Ireland, Poland and Spain) for at least one year, according to a report on the South African Daily Business Daily website on August 8. This has dealt a blow to South Africa's poultry master plan for the past two years, leaving producers confused about the government's policy goal.
The South African Poultry Association said the decision would not help South Africa's efforts to localise, create jobs, implement transformation, invest in or develop the rural econom.
Local chicken producers see one of the biggest threats to the poultry industry as unfair trade practices from countries including Brazil, Ireland, Spain and Denmark, threatening to cancel or delay up to R570m in new investments in protest against the moratorium on anti-dumping duties measure.
