According to South Africa's independent media website reported on November 15, according to the latest "Economist" global food security index, South Africa ranked 59th out of 113 countries, up 11 places from last year
.
The index measures the food security situation of the surveyed countries relative to the world, with South Africa becoming the best food insecure country in Africa, followed by Tunisia
in 62nd place.
Vandir Silobo, chief economist at the South African Agricultural Chamber of Commerce (Agbiz), noted that while South Africa's food security has achieved impressive results at the national level, it still needs to be greatly improved
at the household level.
The agricultural sector cannot bear sole responsibility for household food insecurity, as measures are needed across the economy, including reforms
to stimulate job creation.
