Original title: Night shift plus meals should choose snacks
all night shift, eat a full meal in the middle of the night or snacks to fill the hunger better? Australian researchers believe that snacking is better, both to solve hunger and not to make people sleepy.
researchers divided 44 healthy non-night shift workers into three groups and spent the week in the lab, sleeping most of the day and staying awake all night. All people get enough calories from their food within 24 hours of each day, the same meal time in the morning and evening. The first group added another meal at midnight and had a full meal, which accounted for 30% of the total daily intake; the second group at midnight at snacks such as cheese, biscuits or apples, which were only 10% of the total daily intake; and the third group did not eat any food in the middle of the night, except for breakfast and dinner, and snacked during the day. The results showed that the second group was the most sober, responsive, had the best test scores, had the fewest accidents while driving, and was most satisfied with the amount of food they ate.Writing in the journal Nutrients,
researchers say the study is the first to show that night shift meal patterns can affect job performance, that "eating a big meal in the middle of the night makes us feel more sleepy" and that the body is "not ready to digest these foods." Next, the researchers plan to study which kinds of zero food are suitable for night shift workers.
