Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) affects 22 million people in the United States and is associated with a higher risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and many other chronic diseases

Accelerated age tests include blood tests that analyze DNA and use an algorithm to measure a person's biological age

"Accelerated age is not a symptom unique to OSA, it can be caused by a variety of environmental factors, such as smoking, poor diet or pollution," said Dr.

Cortese's team studied 16 adult non-smokers diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and compared them with 8 non-smoking controls to assess the effect of OSA on epigenetic age acceleration over one year

"Our findings found that sleep disruption and reduced oxygen levels during sleep due to obstructive sleep apnea promoted a faster biological age acceleration compared with controls," Cortese said

The key to CPAP's success in slowing accelerated aging is consistent use of the device for at least four hours a night, Cortese said

"Because children with OSA are treated differently than adults, this study raises a lot of questions," Cortese said
