From SeafoodSource on October 11, the Scottish Government has proposed new national strategic measures
aimed at promoting the Scottish seafood economy in its latest National Seafood Industry Strategy.

The Seafood Strategy outlines how governments can support the fisheries and aquaculture sector and showcases ongoing efforts to monitor and manage marine space, promoting greater consumer confidence
in the sustainability of seafood in the region.

Scotland's Rural Affairs Minister Mairi Gougeon said Scotland's seafood industry was facing increasing competitive pressures and challenges, but the value it brought to the Scottish economy was important
    .

In 2021, Scotland exported £1 billion of fish and other seafood, accounting for 60% of Scotland's total food exports, and the industry now employs almost 15,000 people
    across the country.

As an important part of the fisheries management strategy, the strategy details changes to the licensing conditions for fishing vessels in Scotland to facilitate more vessels entering Scotland while benefiting land-based industries such as processors and transport companies
    .

Salmon Scotland CEO Tavish Scott said the strategy also highlighted the economic contribution
of farmed salmon in Scotland to the region's "world-class seafood".
Farmed salmon is the UK's largest food export, and the industry has a target of net zero emissions by 2045 as part of
    its sustainability commitment.
