Scientists discover cancer biomarkers in breast milk

The newly discovered biomarker is for a specific type of cancer called invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC), one of the most common types of breast cancer

"If our future research is successful, it could change the way women are monitored for breast cancer and aid in early diagnosis," Whitham said.

Whitham presented the research during the Experimental Biology (EB) 2022 session at the American Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, April 2-5

"We use breast milk because it contains proteins, epithelial cells and immune cells, all of which provide a lot of information about what's going on in a woman's body during a critical period of breast development," Whitham said

For the study, researchers obtained breast milk samples from three women diagnosed with breast cancer and three women without cancer

Now, researchers have identified a panel of biomarkers that they plan to validate in a larger group of women
