The team found that drugs used to treat blood pressure unexpectedly increased the effects of opioids that are naturally produced in the brain
"Our findings suggest a new strategy to enhance the way opioids signal in the brain both protective and beneficial, with a low risk of dependence or addiction," said Patrick Rothwell
The study focused on angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), which has long been known to regulate blood pressure
Based on the findings, Rothwell recommends further research into angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, a safe drug used to control blood pressure
The research was funded by the Minnesota Discovery, Research and Innovation Economy (MnDRIVE) initiative and the National Institute on Drug Abuse
In collaboration with Dr Swati More from the Centre for Drug Design in the School of Pharmacy, Rothwell and University researchers are creating new ACE inhibitors to optimise their impact on brain function
