Like insects, crustaceans, and arachnids, millipedes belong to an extremely diverse group of arthropods

Using high-resolution tomography, histological methods and electron microscopy, the researchers found that millipedes have a suction pump that is strikingly similar to that of insects

Thus, the team was able to show that functional dietary tools have independently evolved several times across all major subgroups of arthropods

The study also provides insights into a better understanding of the origins of species diversity
