The decline in Russian salmon catches compared to 2021 is pushing up local prices, and Russia is considering banning exports
    of salmon and salmon roe.

In September 2022, the wholesale price of Russian pink salmon increased by 28% compared to August, reaching 320,000 rubles ($5,135, 5,207 euros)
    per tonne.
Citing a letter from the All-Russian Fisheries Association (VARPE) to Russia's agriculture ministry, the price of salmon also rose 22 percent from the previous month to 440,000 rubles ($7,060, 7,167 euros)
    a tonne, Kommersant reported.

At the beginning of September, the head of the Federal Fisheries Service of Russia launched an initiative to temporarily suspend the export
of some of the most productive salmon species due to the relatively low catch of salmon this year.
He said the initiative is to meet the needs of the domestic market, which is a priority for
    the Russian government.

The fisheries agency proposed the ban to the Russian Ministry of Agriculture, which is currently consulting
    with businesses and trade associations.

In May 2022, before the start of the Russian salmon season on June 1, he spoke several times about a possible ban on exports
due to low forecasts of salmon catches.
So far, the catch has been in line with previous scientific forecasts, and he reiterated his call for a ban on exports
    from September.

"We don't have a good salmon season this year," he said
in an interview aired on NTV.
"In 2020, things weren't much better, but we saw a sharp drop
in salmon catches compared to 2021.
We want to use the export ban to cushion the domestic price growth we are now seeing and guarantee adequate supply
    to the domestic market.
I hope that the final decision will be accepted
    soon.

Russia also experienced a low-salmon fishing period in 2014, 2015 and 2020, but had never imposed an export ban
    before.
This year, salmon catches are around the level of 2014 and 2020, but the appreciation of the ruble has made exports less profitable than in past years
    .

As of October 3, Russia had caught 263,000 tons of salmon, down 50.
1% year-on-year, with salmon roe production falling in tandem and retail prices of salmon and roe rising
    .

According to the Federal Fisheries Agency, the country will produce only 8,000 to 9,000 tons of salmon roe, half
of what it produced in 2021.
Salmon roe is a product that Russians usually eat on special occasions such as birthdays, weddings and New Year's Eve parties, and is eaten in
    small portions.
Rising prices are usually not a hot topic in society and do not have much impact
    on nutrition and food security.
However, this is an issue that always receives widespread media attention and often forces the government to act
    .

VARPE said the export ban could have a downside impact
    on local prices.
