Barrier tissues (such as skin, respiratory tract and digestive tract) are the body's first line of defense against external invasions and are the key structural tissues
for mammals to maintain their integrity.
When the barrier tissue is damaged, inflammation maintains the homeostasis
of the barrier tissue by removing pathogens and promoting tissue repair.
Type 2 innate immunolymphoid cells (ILC2) perform a unique and core function in this process: integrating epithelial signals (e.
g.
, IL-33, IL-25, TSLP, etc.
) and nerve signals (neurotransmitters and neuropeptides) to modulate tissue microenvironment and inflammatory processes
.
The team of Associate Professor Liu Quan from the School of Medicine of Southern University of Science and Technology published a review in the journal Trends in Immunology, a subsidiary of Cell Press Cell Press, comprehensively and systematically reviewed the research results of epithelial-immune and neuro-immune interactions in the frontier fields of immunology.
The central role played by 2 innate lymphoid cells (ILC2) in these interactions in barrier tissue disease was emphasized.
Furthermore, a new concept of
neuro-epithelial-ILC2 interaction was proposed.
